Using Layers

Layers can be helpful in working with intricate documents. For instance, if you have English and French versions of a document, you can put the text for each language on its own layer. You can then display just one version at a time.

To create new layers:

1.
If the Layers palette is not visible, choose Window > Layers to open the palette .

Choose New Layer from the Layers palette submenu. This opens the New Layer dialog box .

Click the New Layer icon. This creates a new layer without opening the New Layer dialog box.

Tip

Hold the Option/Alt key as you click the New Layer icon to open the New Layer dialog box.

Tip

Double-click the name of a layer to open the Layer Options dialog box.

3.
Name the layer and use the Color popup list to set a color for the layer.

Tip

The layer color is the non-printing color used to highlight the object frames and paths.

4.
Click any of the frame options to do the following:

  • Show Layer makes the layer visible.

  • Show Guides displays the guides for that layer.

  • Lock Layer protects any objects on the layer from being changed.

  • Lock Guides protects any guides on the layer from being changed.

5.
Click OK to create the layer.
