Chapter 10. ADVANCED TEXT

Chapter 10. ADVANCED TEXT

The one thing that truly separates the amateurs from the experts in page layout is the control they take over the look of text. The amateurs are pleased if they can apply simple formatting such as fonts, sizes, kerning, tracking, and so on.

The experts, though, want more from a page-layout program. They want sophisticated control over the kerning. This includes moving one character in so that it tucks under the stroke of another.

They want to control how lines are justified within a text frame. This means that it one line is too tightly spaced and the next is too loose, the program reapportions the space between the two lines.

They also want to add sophisticated text effects, such as automatic rules after the paragraphs. And they want total control over how text wraps around images.

These are advanced text effects. Once you apply these features to your documents, you move from the ordinary designer to the typographer.
