Chapter 7. Typography > Copyfitting

Copyfitting

If you need to squeeze text into a tight space or bring up a stubborn orphan word or hyphenated word (horrors!) from the end of a paragraph, use whichever of these techniques you think your readers are least likely to notice:

  • Apply –1 or –2 tracking.

  • Rewrite the copy—delete, add, rearrange, or substitute words (only if it's your own writing or you're authorized to do so, of course!)

  • Apply 99% scaling.

  • Apply slightly tighter word spacing using an H&J.

  • Switch to a condensed font.

  • Widen the column.
