To save an existing file:

Choose File menu > Save (Ctrl-S). The Save command will be dimmed if no modifications were made to the file since it was last saved.

The Save As command creates a copy of a document under a different name, and is useful if you want to generate multiple variations of a document. Or if you're having trouble saving a file or it seems to be corrupted, you can try rescuing it by saving a new version of it using Save As.
