Chapter 14. Master pages > To number pages automatically:

To number pages automatically:

1.
Double-click the Master A icon on the Document Layout palette . The words "A-Master A" will appear in the lower left corner of the document window.

2.
Choose the Rectangle text box tool.

3.
Press and drag to create a small text box for the page number.

4.
Hold down Ctrl and press "3" . You can type a prefix, such as "Page," before the page numbering command. Enter the command on both the left and right master pages for a facing-pages document (see , next page).

5.
Highlight the numbering command, then style it like a regular character (choose a font, point size, etc.).

Note: You can also place a header, picture box, vertical rule, or any other item on a master page. More about this on page 218.

6.
To display a document page when you're finished editing the master, double-click a document page icon on the Document Layout palette or use the Shift-F4 shortcut .

Tip

Unfortunately, the automatic page numbers can't be manually kerned and they are unaffected by the Kerning Table Editor. You can track the Current Page Number command on the master page, but doing so will cause all the document's automatic page numbers to be tracked by the same value.
