Chapter 6. Formats > To create or edit an H&J:

To create or edit an H&J:

1.
Choose Edit menu > H&Js (Ctrl-Alt-H or Ctrl-Shift-F11).

2.
To create a new H&J, click New , then enter a name.

or

Choose an existing H&J, then click Edit. The Standard H&J can be modified.

3.
Check the Auto Hyphenation box .

4.
Change any of these hyphenation settings:

In the Smallest Word field, change the minimum number of characters a word must contain to be hyphenated.

In the Minimum Before field, change the minimum number (1–6) of a word's characters that must precede a hyphen.

In the Minimum After field, change the minimum number (2–8) of characters that can follow a hyphen. For the sake of readability, I use 3 rather than the default 2.

Check or uncheck the Break Capitalized Words box for words that begin with an uppercase character.

Change the number of consecutive lines that can end with a hyphen in the Hyphens in a Row field. More than two hyphens in a row can impair readability.

Enter a higher number than zero in the Hyphenation Zone field to create a more ragged edge (less hyphenation).

5.
To tighten word spacing in justified paragraphs, enter lower values in the Space: Minimum and Space: Maximum fields The subheads and thumb tabs in this book have slightly tightened word spacing. Head lines usually have tighter-than-normal word (and character) spacing. To loosen word spacing, enter higher values.

To tighten character spacing in justified paragraphs, enter lower values in the Char.: Minimum and Char.: Maximum fields. To loosen character spacing, enter higher values. Experiment. The effect can vary depending on the font.

To change word or character spacing in non-justified paragraphs, change the values in either Optimum field.

6.
Click OK or press Enter.

7.
Click Save. To apply an H&J, follow the instructions on the next page.

Tip

To delete an H&J, click its name, then click Delete. If the H&J is currently applied to text in your document, you'll be prompted to choose a replacement H&J for the deleted one.
