To add chapters to a book:

1.
Get the chapter files ready. You can use File menu > Save As to generate copies of the master file or you can use existing files. Make sure they all have the same page size.

Click the Add Chapter (leftmost) icon on the book palette , locate and highlight the name of a file that you want to become a chapter in the book, then click Add or press Enter . Repeat this step for any other files that you want to become chapters. The actual files don't have to be open. If you add a pre-4.0 version file, you'll get an alert prompt (click OK).

Note: If no chapter name is highlighted when you click the Add Chapter icon, the new chapter will be added to the end of the book. If a chapter name is highlighted when you click the Add Chapter icon, the new chapter will be added directly above the highlighted one.

3.
Click the Synchronize Book (left/right arrow) icon to apply the style sheets, colors, H&Js, etc. from the master chapter to all the chapter files. Page numbering will advance incrementally though the chapter files (unless any contain section numbering). Click OK or press Enter when the warning prompt appears .

4.
Close the Book palette (click the close box).All open book chapters will also close. You will be prompted to save changes, if there were any.

Tip

Each chapter file can only be part of one book. To get around this, you can copy a chapter using File menu > Save As. Or use Edit > Copy (Ctrl-C or right-click and choose copy in Explorer). Then you can use the copy in a different book.
