To choose Index Preferences:

1.
Choose Edit menu > Preferences > Index.

Optional: To change the Index Marker Color (the brackets in marked text), click on the color square, choose a new color, then click OK.

Change any or all of the settings in the Separation Characters fields :

Following Entry is the punctuation following the index entry (as in "Biscuit,").

Between Page #s is the punctuation between non-continuous page numbers (as in "34, 77").

Between Page Range is the punctuation in a range of pages (as in "24–102"). Use an en dash (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-hyphen).*

Before X-ref is the punctuation used before a "See" cross-reference (as in "Biscuit, 20. See also Rolls"). (This character will replace the chosen Following Entry character when necessary.)

Between Entries is the punctuation between entries in a run-in style index (as in "frog, 17; toad, 18") and the ending punctuation in a paragraph in a nested style index.

4.
Click OK or press Enter.

Follow these instructions to generate the actual index once the document or documents have been marked for indexing and pagination is finalized.
