Theory and Practice

While I will discuss the basics of making and handling XML files in this appendix, I won't get into the nitty-gritty details of how the software works for two reasons. First, the XML XTensions that shipped with QuarkXPress 5.0 are still somewhat buggy at the time of this writing, and some things that should work simply don't.

Second, and perhaps more important, many (perhaps most) people who want to get into an XML workflow with XPress won't be using the XML tools that ship with the program. For instance, today most companies that are creating XML from their QuarkXPress documents use a third-party system, such as Apropos's RoustaboutXT (www.attd.com), Noonetime's Xtract and Constellation (www.noonetime.com), Easypress's Atomik (www.easypress.com), or North Atlantic Publishing Systems's NTS (www.napsys.com).
