The Open Street

The Open Street

Glenn Fleishman and Jeff Carlson write in their book Real World GoLive, that “XML is the greatest thing since spatially divided grain-based baked food products.” For those folks who create structured documents that they need to repurpose with different formatting or for different media, there is little doubt that this is true. On the other hand, folks who like to draw outside the lines, and make shorter documents like ads will likely find XML almost completely useless.

A QuarkXPress document has always been like a dead-end road for your content—once your text and graphics hit the page, it's been hard to get them out again. XML changes that, turning XPress into just one stop on a through street. XML lets your data flow in and flow out. In a perfect world, your data would begin as XML before it even gets close to QuarkXPress. It's not always as easy as it sounds, but XML is certainly a powerful workflow when used correctly.
