Appendix E. XML Tools

Appendix E. XML Tools

Take this test to determine whether you should read this appendix. Rate your true feelings about style sheets between one (“I don't even know what they are”) and ten (“I am totally in love with style sheets and I scream epithets at my colleagues when they don't use them properly”). If you score five or less, go back and read Chapter 7, Copy Flow, until you appreciate style sheets more. If you rate above five, you're on the right track. If your feelings tend toward 11, then read this chapter.

Before I get into the details of what XML is, let me explain why your feelings about style sheets will determine your success with XML. First, it's almost impossible to be efficient with XML if you haven't been somewhat religious about using style sheets in your documents. In fact, documents that don't really require style sheets (like ads and one-page flyers) are totally inappropriate for XML anyway. XML is all about magazines, newspapers, books, and other documents that have the same kinds of elements week after week, month after month, or file after file.
