Paragraph Rules

While you can now anchor rules (lines) into text, you can produce anchored rules using a different method as well: the Rules feature. This kind of rule is actually a paragraph attribute and is found in the Paragraph Attributes dialog box (see Chapter 6, Type and Typography). There are several benefits to using paragraph rules, including the ability to build them into style sheets. In this section I'll explore how to make these anchored paragraph rules. Unfortunately, these rules can only be horizontal (see “Tip: Vertical Rules,” earlier in this chapter).

Rule Above/Rule Below

The one way to set anchored paragraph rules is via the Rules tab in the Paragraph Attributes dialog box. While your text cursor is in a paragraph or highlighting it, you can select Rules from the Style menu (or press Command-Shift-N). You then have the choice to place a rule above the paragraph, below it, or both (see Figure 11-19).
