Chapter 6. Type and Typography > Character Formatting

Character Formatting

There are two types of typographic controls: character-based and paragraph-based. The character-based controls—typeface, size, color, bold, italic, and so on—are those that affect only the text characters you select. If you select only one word in a sentence and apply a character style to it, that word and only that word is changed. Paragraph-based controls let you change the formatting of the entire paragraph—left and right indents, tab settings, space before and after, and so on.

Let's talk about character formatting first—how you can change it, and why you'd want to.
