First Baseline

The first line of a text box is always a tricky one for perfectionists. How far away from the top edge of the text box should the line sit? And how to get it there? Usually, QuarkXPress places the first line of text according to the text box's Text Inset value. For instance, if the Text Inset is set to 3 points, then the top of the first line of text is set 3 points away from the top edge of the box.

Typophiles will be happy to find that you can clarify what XPress uses as the “top of the first line of text” with the Minimum setting (found on the Text tab in the Modify dialog box—Command-M). You can choose three values for the Minimum setting: Cap Height, Cap+Accent, and Ascent (see Figure 6-32).
