Chapter 6. Type and Typography

Chapter 6. Type and Typography

There's an old husband's tale that says you can tell what a baby is going to grow up to become by the first real word she speaks. If she says “mama,” she'll grow up to be a loving parent. If she says “teevee,” chances are she will be a couch potato. If she says “QuarkXPress,” she'll become a designer.

There's no doubt—even if this tale is hogwash—that QuarkXPress is often the first word on a designer's lips when the topic of desktop publishing comes up. That's because no desktop-publishing application handles typesetting as powerfully as QuarkXPress does. In this chapter, I will discuss the many typographic controls that QuarkXPress puts at your fingertips. I'm going to start with the basics: typographic principles and fonts. However, professionals should at least skim over this section (the fundamentals of fonts are rarely taught, and many people find themselves in deep…uh…water at some point because of it).
