Getting Scripting Information

Getting Scripting Information

It's nearly impossible to learn how to script QuarkXPress without extra documentation. Fortunately, Quark ships some information about AppleEvent scripting along with the Macintosh version of QuarkXPress, but it's not immediately obvious. It's an Acrobat PDF file called Apple Events Scripting, hidden inside the Apple Events folder, which is hidden inside the Document folder which is, in turn, inside the QuarkXPress folder. (Do these lists ever remind you of Leviticus, in which Izzy begat Herbie, and Herbie begat Pearl, and Pearl begat…?)

Books

Fortunately, since the last edition of this book, several good books have been published on AppleScripting. Most are somewhat general, such as Danny Goodman's Guide to AppleScript and the AppleScript for Applications Visual QuickStart Guide. Those are great, but if you're going to script QuarkXPress, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of AppleScripting QuarkXPress by Shirley Hopkins; it's very good and comes with a CD-ROM with lots of example scripts.
