Chapter 13. Printing > Working with an Imaging Center

Working with an Imaging Center

Whether you're sending your XPress documents to a service bureau or to a commercial printer that has their own imagesetter or platesetter equipment, it's important to include the right information and files. Imaging centers have developed standard etiquette and rules spoken only in hushed voices (and usually after the customer has left the shop). In this section I bring these rules out into the open and take you through, step by step, how to best send files to your imaging bureau, and how to ensure that you'll receive the best-quality output from them.

The first thing to remember when dealing with service bureaus is that they don't necessarily know their equipment or what's best for your file any better than you do. That's not to say that they are ignorant louts, but I am of the opinion that really good imaging bureaus are few and far between, and you (the customer) have to be careful and know what you're doing. The principal relationship I talk about in this section is that of you, the customer, sending your QuarkXPress files to a service bureau to be imageset. I'll talk first about sending the actual XPress document, and then about sending either a PostScript or a PDF file. Many of my suggestions may be totally wrong for the way your particular service bureau functions, so take what works and leave the rest. Some prefer PDF files, for instance, while others opt for the XPress files themselves.
