Dynamically Updating Images

In the fast-paced production environment of most magazines, newspapers, and ad agencies (plus your business, of course), any technique to streamline the workflow is appreciated. If you work with a lot of images that are subject to change, you can use the Picture Usage dialog box to manually update images, or you can use QuarkXPress's built-in ability to dynamically update the graphics in your documents. Dynamic updating is not for everyone, but for some people it's a lifesaver.

In this section I'm going to discuss three methods you can use to keep pictures updated: Auto Picture Import, Publish and Subscribe, and Object Linking and Embedding (OLE). I can tell you right now that I'd almost never use the Windows-only OLE system, but there are some particularly cool tricks you can use with QuarkXPress's Publish and Subscribe feature on the Macintosh.
