Graphic File Formats

If there's a question I'm asked more often than “Why won't my file print?” it's “What's the difference between all those different graphic formats?” The question refers to a host of formats with names such as EPS, TIFF, GIF, PICT, LZW, TIFF, JPEG, Photo CD (PCD), and Windows Metafile (WMF). No one can be blamed for being confused when faced with such a list! Some of these are different names for the same thing, others are subtly different, and a few represent totally different concepts.

The fundamental question when considering a graphic file format is whether it is bitmapped or object-oriented.
