What Does (and Doesn't) Transfer

What Does (and Doesn't) Transfer

Physically moving your QuarkXPress files from one platform to the next and successfully opening them is only half the job of transferring files. In general, all page-layout, text, and picture information comes across just fine in either direction, as do any changes you've made to the Document preferences. Also, any colors, style sheets, and H&J settings you've defined in the document generally transfer without a hitch. However, you'd better be aware of what doesn't get transferred. QuarkXPress documents on each platform are almost identical, but that “almost” can trip you up if you're not careful.

XPress Preferences

There is no way to move the XPress Preferences file from one platform to the other, but fortunately, that's not something that many people need to do. All the document-level preferences are saved within the document itself, and almost all of them translate perfectly (Auto Ligatures is one notable exception). When you open a Macintosh file in QuarkXPress for Windows, you're often prompted with the “XPress Preferences does not match” dialog box. I typically just click the Use Document Preferences button (or press Enter).
