Lists

If you've been searching through the menus for a “table of contents” feature, you can stop now. There is no such feature. Instead, Quark offers something much better: a Lists feature, which can not only generate a table of contents, but all kinds of lists, as well.

Technically, the Lists feature lets you build collections of text (words or paragraphs) that have been tagged with specific style sheets. For instance, if you use even two style sheets when you're formatting a book—one for the chapter name and another for your first-level headings—you can build a basic table of contents by collecting all the paragraphs tagged with these two styles. If you use paragraph style sheets to tag your figure titles, you can build a table of figures. If you apply a character style to the names of companies mentioned in your document, then you can collect them all with the Lists feature and build a list of them later. Anything you can tag with a paragraph or character style, you can build into a list. (In case you were wondering, the ability to use character styles is new in XPress 5.)
