Contrast

The Style menu also lets you change the contrast of grayscale and color images with the Contrast feature. If you are working with a one-bit (black-and-white) picture, this feature is inaccessible.

Contrast refers to the relationships among the tonal values of a picture. A high-contrast picture divides up the gray shades or color saturation of an image into a few sharply distinct tones; a low-contrast picture has little differentiation between tones, and looks grayed out. You should try to strike some balance between these two, though you may want to create an unnatural-looking image by drastically altering the contrast controls.
