Chapter 10. Fine-Tuning Images > The Picture File

The Picture File

In this chapter, I am concerned almost exclusively with bitmapped images. Bitmapped images, as far as QuarkXPress is concerned, are black and white, grayscale, or color, and are found in TIFF, JPEG, BMP, PNTG, and bitmap-only PICT files. Bitmapped images can also be saved as EPS files, but because the image data is encapsulated, XPress won't let you change anything about them. Therefore, the only time I'll discuss EPS files here is when I explore clipping paths. The rest of the time, I'm just going to assume that you're using TIFF or JPEG files (see Chapter 9, Pictures, for why I don't like using the other bitmapped file formats).

Bitmapped Images

I want to take this opportunity to refresh your memory about bitmapped images and the TIFF file type, which I discussed in Chapter 9, Pictures. Here are the highlights.
