Chapter 7. Copy Flow > Working Smart

Working Smart

Simply put, there are two ways to handle your copy in QuarkXPress: the dumb way and the smart way. What's the main difference between the two? Working the smart way, you make the computer do as much of your work as possible. Working the dumb way, you take it on yourself to do the kind of mindless, repetitive tasks computers were meant to take off your hands—in this case, the repetitive formatting and reformatting of copy.

It takes a bit more time at first to set up a document to take advantage of QuarkXPress's automation, but it is well worth it if you ever need to make even the simplest document-wide change in the way your text is formatted. Of course, if you're the kind of person who always gets everything right the first time, you'll never, ever need to change any formatting once you've entered it, so you may not find this chapter of much use. The rest of you should pay careful attention.
