Chapter 12. Color

Chapter 12. Color

Look around you. Unless you're fully color-blind, everything around you has color. It's not really surprising that folks have wanted to work with color in their documents since…well, since they've been creating documents! What is surprising is how complicated working with color can be, especially with all this computer equipment that's supposed to make life easy for us.

There's a range of complicated issues in desktop color: specifying the color you want, getting that color to print on a color or (more likely) a black-and-white laser printer, and producing separated films ready for offset printing. Getting color off the desktop was once a joke among the few people who had actually tried. However, as the '90s rolled in, people's success stories outnumbered their failures and it became clear that desktop color was here to stay. Of course, achieving quality color on your Macintosh or PC is still not as easy as turning on the computer; we still have our work cut out for us. But at least now we know it's possible.
