Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons

When it comes right down to it, I think that the QuarkCMS XTension is not only really cool, but it can be incredibly useful. However, it obviously has limits and isn't for everyone all the time. In fact, as it turns out, I very rarely use it; instead, I focus on color-managing my images in Photoshop and thenI just try to ignore the solid colors I create in XPress. One of the most important things to note is that color management works best when you're comparing apples to oranges rather than to salmons or coffee beans. You'll get a better idea of a final color by looking at a printed color proof than at the screen. You can calibrate all you want, and you'll still always get a more reliable image from a printer than from the screen. It still won't be a perfect match to your final output, of course, but it's that much closer. Clearly, as with just about every other aspect of desktop publishing, WYSIWYG color is a relative thing.
