Fractions

There are several ways to produce fractions in QuarkXPress:

  • In Windows, for ¼, press Alt + 0188; for ½, press Alt + 0189; and for ¾, press Alt + 0190.

  • Use an expert character set, like Adobe Garamond Expert. It looks like this: ¾ Or use a math font.

  • Type the numerator, a slash, and the denominator, highlight all the characters, then choose Style > Type Style > Make Fraction. The fraction will look like this: ¾. You can kern between the characters in this type of fraction. Choose Fraction/Price preferences in Edit menu > Preferences > Fraction/Price . Fraction/Price is also part of the free TypeTricks XTension.

  • And lastly, you can build a fraction by hand, but it's a cumbersome process. Type the numerator, type a virgule (Option-Shift-1/Alt + 0218), type the denominator, apply the Superior style to the numerator, and finally, divide the point size of the denominator in half. This is what you get: ¾. You can adjust the Superior style Offset, VScale, and HScale in Edit > Preferences > Preferences > Document–Character.
