Get your dashes straight

When to use a regular hyphen: To write a compound word, as in “three-year-old.”

When to use an en dash (Option-hyphen/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-hyphen): Between a range of numbers, as in “Figures 4–6,” a time frame, as in “4–6 weeks,” or a distance, as in “4–6 miles.”
