Chapter 1. The Basics > Preferences (a sneak preview)

Preferences (a sneak preview)

Preferences are the default settings that can be chosen for an individual document or for the application as a whole. Chapter 22 is devoted entirely to the Preferences dialog boxes, and some preferences are discussed in individual chapters, where relevant. As you learn QuarkXPress, you may change a preferences setting here or there, and thus gradually familiarize yourself with them. Below is a list of some of the settings that can be changed.

Other kinds of defaults

If you add, delete, or edit style sheets (including the Normal style sheet), colors, hyphenation exceptions, H&Js (settings for hyphenation and justification), or an auxiliary dictionary when no documents are open, those specifications will become the new defaults for any subsequently created documents.

The same holds true for any Document Preferences that you change while no document is open, such as Measurement units, Auto Page Insertion, or Auto Picture Import on or off. Preferences are chosen in Edit > Preferences. Take the time to set up document defaults this way—it will save you oodles of time later!
