Chapter 1. The Basics > XTending XPress with XTensions

XTending XPress with XTensions

What is an XTension?

QuarkXPress doesn't do everything. In fact, one of its great selling features is that third-party developers have written hundreds of add-on software modules for the program, called XTensions, that extend or enhance its features. XTensions can do everything from a simple object alignment to catalogue databasing, and they range in price from petty cash to hundreds of dollars.

Shopping for XTensions

Some XTensions are sold individually, while others are sold in a bundle, such as XPert Tools and Xdream. Luckily, most XTensions are available in a demo version so you can try them out before you invest.

For a directory of XTensions, visit the Quark Web site: www.quark.com. Individual developer names and contact numbers are listed for each XTension. To see a list of distributors, including international distributors, click XTensions Catalog (on the right side of the screen, at least as of this writing), then click Resource Locator: Where to Buy. You can also download free XTensions from this site, such as Shape of Things for creating star-shaped boxes, so it's worth a visit for that alone. Other free XTensions that are available for downloading include Jabberwocky, Guide Manager, Super Step and Repeat, and Type Tricks.

If you'd rather shop from a distributor who sells XTensions from an assortment of developers, try www.thepowerxchange.com (click QuarkXPress at the top of their home page).

Ask whichever manufacturer or distributor you purchase your XTensions from what their upgrade policy is and what technical support they offer, if any.

And while you're at it, check out this site for tips and resources: www.xpressobar.com (it's not related to Quark, Inc.).
