Chapter 4. Text Input > To move a text box manually:

To move a text box manually:

1.
Choose the Item tool. Or hold down Cmd/Ctrl to temporarily use the Item tool if the Content tool is selected.

Snap to it

If View > Snap to Guides is turned on (Shift-F7 toggles it on and off) and you drag the handle of a box or an anchor point near a guide, the handle or point will snap to the guide with a little tug. Turn Snap to Guides off to drag items manually without the little tug.

2.
Press inside a text box, pause briefly for the text to redraw, then drag the item to a new location on the same page or on a different page (the cursor will be a cluster of arrowheads). The X and Y position values on the Measure ments palette will update as you drag. To force scrolling, knock into the edge of the document window while dragging.

Figure 1. Pause before dragging to see the contents of the item as you move it...

Figure 2. ...or drag without pausing to see only the outline of the box as it's moved. Use this method on a slow machine.

TIP

Hold down Shift as you drag to constrain the movement to a horizontal or vertical axis. Release the mouse before releasing Shift. To use ruler guides to position an item, see page 185.

Use the Measurements palette to move the upper left corner of an item to a precise x/y location, relative to the ruler origin.
