To select an item that is behind another item:

1.
Choose the Item or the Content tool— whichever tool you're going to use to edit the item you want to select. If you're going to move the item, choose the Item tool; if you're going to edit its contents, choose the Content tool.

2.
Cmd-Option-Shift-click/Ctrl-Alt-Shift-click an item . Repeat to select each item behind it in succession . After the backmost item under the pointer is selected, the next click will reselect the topmost item in that spot.
