Chapter 10. Multiple Items > To drag-copy an item between documents:

To drag-copy an item between documents:

1.
Open two QuarkXPress files, and resize or move both document windows, if necessary, so they don't completely overlap each other. In the Mac OS, if you like, you can hold down Shift, press on the document title bar, and choose Tiled Documents. In Windows, choose Window > Tile Horizontally or Tile Vertically.

2.
Choose the Item tool, or hold down Cmd/Ctrl if the Content tool is chosen.

3.
Drag an item or group from one document window (the “source” document) into the other (the “target” document). A duplicate will be created automatically . Any style sheets, H&Js, or custom colors that were applied to the item in the source document will be added to the target document.

Figure 1. Open two files, choose the Item tool, then drag an item from one document window into the other.

Figure 2. A duplicate is made automatically as the item is dragged; the original item is unchanged.

If the item was on a layer in the source document, the item's layer will come along with it, but not any other items on that layer.

TIP

If you drag-copy a box containing linked text, the text in that box will duplicate, along with any hidden overflow text from that point to the end of the story. If your document contains multiple layers, see page 261!
