Chapter 10. Multiple Items > To duplicate an item:

To duplicate an item:

1.
Choose the Item or Content tool.

2.
Select the item or group you want to duplicate .

Figure 2. Select the item to be duplicated, then choose Item > Duplicate.

3.
Choose Item > Duplicate (Cmd-D/Ctrl-D) . The default Duplicate offset values are 1p6 to the right and 1p6 downward. However, if the Step and Repeat dialog box has been used in the same work session, then the last-used offsets from that dialog box will be used instead of the defaults (see the next page).

Figure 3. A duplicate is made.

Using the Step and Repeat command, multiple duplicates can be made at one time and you can specify how far apart the duplicates will be from one another. The offset distance is calculated from the upper left corner of each item (or the bounding box, in the case of a Bézier box, line, or text path). You can use this command to reproduce any kind of item or group (e.g., you could generate multiple picture and caption groups in neat horizontal or vertical rows).
