Books

To create a book:

1.
Decide which file will be the master. The master file specifications will be applied to all the book chapters. To create a master file:

Create a new file that contains only the master page(s), style sheets, colors, H&Js, lists, and dashes and stripes that you want all the chapter files to share. Apply the Current Page Number command (Cmd-3/Ctrl-3) to a text box on the master page. Save the file. Include the word “master” in the title, if you like, to help prevent confusion later on.

or

Open an existing file, and use File > Save As to save a copy of it (use the word “master” in the name). Delete all the text and all the pages except the first page, then resave the file. As with a new file, make sure it contains only the master pages, style sheets, colors, H&Js, lists, and dashes & stripes that you want all the chapter files to share, and make sure it contains the Current Page Number command in a text box on the master page.

You can use File > Append to append style sheets, colors, lists, etc. from any other file to the master.

2.
Choose File > New > Book.

3.
Enter a name for the book, and choose a location in which to save it .

4.
Click Create (Return/Enter).

5.
On the book palette that opens, click the Add Chapter (leftmost) button .

6.
Locate and click the name of the file that you want to serve as the master , then click Add (Return/Enter) . Now you can start adding chapters to the book (see the instructions on the next page).

No backing out

Book changes, such as adding or rearranging chapters, can't be undone, nor can the Revert to Saved command be used to restore a book to an earlier version.

Edits to a book are saved when you close the book palette or quit/exit QuarkXPress. Save edits to an individual chapter as you would any other document.
