Up to this point you’ve seen both commercially produced (The Art of the Heist, the Beast) and sample ARGs (Route 66) in action. While alternate reality gaming is moving beyond the confines of the virtual world to also include such real world elements as live staged events, telephone calls, and faxes, a very large component of the gaming genre remains the Web site, and more specifically how seemingly unrelated Web sites can be designed and linked together to help form a compelling narrative.

This chapter, as well as Chapter 10, has several goals:
