Chapter 1. Unreality: A Brief History of ARG > Beginnings: Paging Jeanine Salla

Beginnings: Paging Jeanine Salla

It was the spring of 2001, and the Steven Spielberg film A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) was starting to make waves at the box office. The film, set in the distant future, follows the tale of a young robotic humanoid named David. Having thought they’ve lost their real son, Martin, a young couple acquires David in an attempt to begin the healing process, hoping that his presence will help them move on with their lives.

However, early in the film, their real son recovers from his near-death illness and returns home. Once there, it is not long before the robotic David is quickly ignored and eventually left out in the world to fend for himself. The focus of the movie is on David’s adventures through the futuristic world, in an attempt—not unlike a futuristic Pinocchio—to find some method of becoming a real boy.
