ARG Defined

So what exactly is alternate reality gaming? You might be asking yourself this question after reading the introduction to this book with its talk of mysterious “number stations,” the blurring of the lines between the virtual and physical worlds, and strange references to Steven Spielberg movies. You also might have serious reservations about reading any further.

Let me put your fears aside and convince you that the world of alternate reality gaming is a world that is most definitely worth exploring. From experienced gamers (computer or otherwise) to those who just enjoy a good mystery, perhaps the most enticing thing about ARGing is that, because of the content of the games and how those games are presented, they assume (indeed, demand) interactive collaboration between several different players in order to solve the mysteries they contain. As you will see later in this chapter and especially Chapters 3 and 4, this level of collaboration can be nothing short of mind blowing (and I use that phrase in the best sense of the word)! And what’s more, the collaborative aspect of ARGing has already shown promise as a method of communication that can (and will) move out of the purely “game” arena and into other disciplines like academic, business, and marketing and any other area where problem solving and critical thinking are required.
