Using Reports in Business

The significance of reports in the business environment is simple: a report is the logical end product of all your hard work—data entry, querying, data analysis, and so on. The report contents represent the “polished” form of the data, and so the report itself should look just as polished. The report is, in a sense, your representative. When you send copies of the report to other people, the report becomes an extension of you and a reflection of your work habits and knowledge.

Taking a few extra minutes now to construct a high-quality report pays off in the long run because it makes your data more readable and it ensures that your readers treat your data with the seriousness it deserves. After all, it's only natural to assume that a sloppy-looking report must contain sloppy data and shoddy conclusions. True, an attractive report isn't automatically an effective one, but it gives your readers one less reason to question the data and one more reason to treat the data with respect.
