Using the Server Administration Tool

In previous versions of FileMaker Server, a given instance of FileMaker Server could be administered only from the console of the machine on which the server software was installed. FileMaker Server 7 introduces the Server Administration Tool, a separate piece of software that can administer multiple remote instances of FileMaker Server. You can't configure FileMaker Server without using the SAT, though you can perform many routine administrative tasks from the command line.


When you open the SAT, you are prompted to connect to a server. You can choose a server that's available on your local network, a server you've stored in a list of “Favorite Servers,” or a server that's registered with an LDAP server. (We cover the LDAP registration process later in the chapter.) The connection screen is shown in Figure 25.1.
