ODBC/JDBC

ODBC (which stands for Open Database Connectivity) and JDBC are standards that were developed to facilitate data exchange between disparate data sources. FileMaker can access remote data via ODBC/JDBC (sometimes referred to jointly as “xDBC”), and it can act also as an ODBC/JDBC data source for other applications. The latter is a deployment option you should consider if you need your FileMaker data to feed other applications in your organization.

TIP

ODBC and JDBC are standards, not languages or applications. Different applications are compliant with these standards to varying degrees. SQL (Structured Query Language) is the language used to exchange data via ODBC/JDBC.
