Acknowledgments

One of the best things about writing a book is finishing it and getting to thank all the other people who contributed. Authors can come up with a pile of manuscripts (or, these days, computer files), but many other people are essential for producing the printed book you’re reading. So, our thanks to acquisitions editor Stephanie McComb, development editor Mark Cierzniak, project editor Tricia Liebig, production editor Megan Wade, and technical editor Mark Hall.

As we were writing this book, Microsoft Access observed its 10th anniversary. Although the program has come a long way in that time, an Access 1.0 developer would still recognize the version we work with today. The original Access team and their successors did phenomenal work in coming up with this groundbreaking database, and we’re pleased to build on their work. There’s no way to individually thank the hundreds of developers, testers, writers, and managers at Microsoft who pulled together Access, but we are keenly aware of their contribution to this book.

Of course, we each have our own support system as well. Susan thanks Mike Gunderloy for agreeing to take on the project at the last minute and Stephanie McComb at Que for contacting her about the book. Mostly, she thanks her family for helping her work from home in socks and sweatshirt.

And Mike wants to thank Susan and Stephanie for bringing him on board—this one’s been a lot of fun. Thanks, too, to Adam and Kayla for making sure I didn’t concentrate on writing to the exclusion of all else. Whether it’s chasing around the yard or changing diapers, kids are a constant source of interruptions and joy, and I wouldn’t do without them. But most of all, I need to thank Dana, whose help with the family and the house and the farm and life makes it all worthwhile.
