Chapter 13. Extending Crystal Enterprise > Understanding Crystal Server Pages

Understanding Crystal Server Pages

With Crystal Enterprise, Web applications such as ePortfolio are enabled on the Web Component Server (WCS) by using Crystal Server Pages (CSP), which work in a similar fashion to Microsoft’s Active Server Pages (ASP) or Java Server Pages (JSP). In essence, CSP pages are HTML pages that contain embedded snippets of code or script.

In the same way that ASP pages work, CSP pages allow for COM objects to be used in the embedded code. The embedded code in a CSP page is dynamically processed server-side, on the WCS, with the results of the page being served back to the client as plain HTML content. The COM objects that are called within the script or code of a CSP page are the objects that comprise the Crystal Enterprise SDK. It’s this power that enables an application developer to leverage any function of Crystal Enterprise in any way he chooses.
