Other System Tasks: Backing Up the APS System Database

The APS system database stores information about users, groups, folders, and security. A corrupted or deleted APS database will cause the Crystal Enterprise system to malfunction. It’s critical that the APS database be backed up frequently.

By default, Crystal Enterprise attempts to install the APS database on the local Crystal Enterprise server. If a SQL Server is not present on the Crystal Enterprise server, Crystal Enterprise will install the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE), also known as Personal SQL Server. MSDE is generally not recommended for large, mission-critical deployments. It’s better to store the APS system database on a true database server that’s backed up nightly. Supported APS system database servers for the Windows platform include Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, and Informix. For the Solaris platform APS database support, refer to Appendix A.
