Troubleshooting

Appending Records Causes Primary Key Problems

Q1:After appending records to an existing table, I can't create a primary key on the table.
A1: The Unique Values Only test that you specify in the Query Properties window applies only to the query, not to the table to which you append the records. If you want to preclude the possibility of appending duplicate records to the tblShipAddresses table, you must first create the composite primary key, discussed in the “Using the New tblShipAddresses Table” section, which creates a No Duplicates index on the primary key, and then append the records.

Access Won't Create a Jet Relationship to a New Table

Q1:When I try to enforce referential integrity, I get a “Can't create relationship to enforce referential integrity” message.
A1: You dragged the field symbols in the wrong direction when you created the relationship. The related table is in the Table/Query list and the primary or base table is in the Related Table/Query list. Close the Edit Relationships dialog, click the thin area of the join line to select the join, and then press the Delete key to delete the join. Make sure that you drag the field name that you want from the primary table to the related table.
