Establishing User Logins

Logins control access to SQL Server instances and the databases they contain. If you run SQL Server under Windows NT/XP/2000+, you can use integrated Windows security, SQL Server security, or both to authenticate database users. Using both authentication methods is called mixed security. MSDE running under Windows 98/Me+ supports only SQL Server security.

Note

The examples of this chapter use integrated Windows 2000/XP security in the oakmont.edu (OAKMONTU) sample domain. This domain has 44 Organizational Units (OUs), 60 Global and Domain Local security groups, and about 2,500 user accounts. Each user account is a member of at least three security groups. The examples also are applicable to Windows NT networks.
