Chapter 23. Administering Databases with... > Comparing Jet and SQL Server Databas...

Comparing Jet and SQL Server Database Management Tools

Access has integrated tools for creating, securing, compacting, and repairing Jet databases. These tools connect to Microsoft's proprietary Jet Application Programming Interface (API); Data Access Objects (DAO) 3.6 are a wrapper for the Jet API to enable VBA programming of database management chores. The Microsoft ActiveX Data Objects 2.5 or 2.6 Library and Microsoft ADO Ext. 2.5 for DDL and Security let you use Jet SQL action queries to manage Jet 4.0 databases with VBA code.

Access Data Projects (ADP) use SQL Server Distributed Management Objects (DMO) and T-SQL DDL statements for database management. Access 2002's built-in tools for SQL Server database management are limited to creating a new database when you open a new .adp file, backing up and restoring databases, and copying or transferring an existing database from one instance of SQL Server to another.
