Conforming Jet and SQL Server 7.0/MSDE Databases

The Jet .mdb file structure has changed for the fifth time. Access 2000's Jet 4.0 .mdb file structure isn't backward-compatible with Access 97, 95, or 2.0 .mdb files. The requirement that Jet be easily interchangeable with SQL Server 7.0 databases, as well as accommodate new ADP objects in DocFiles, made changes to the Jet 4.0 database structure inevitable.

You can open a database created with a prior version in Access 2000, but you can't open an Access 2000 database in an earlier version. You can't change in Access 2000 the properties of database objects created with prior versions of Access; you must convert the file to Jet 4.0 format to make Design mode changes.
