Part 7: Programming and Converting Acces... > Programming Combo and List Boxes

Chapter 29. Programming Combo and List Boxes

Decision-support applications deliver information used by management to analyze business trends. Data warehousing, one of today's hottest database technology topics, is the back end for decision-support applications in large organizations. The source data for the tables that comprise a data warehouse is a condensed version (called a roll-up) of the content of production databases used by online transaction processing (OLTP) applications. Creating roll-ups of production data for decision support, usually on a server not running OLTP databases, maximizes the performance of both activities.

Decision-support applications involve read-only access to data, so you aren't limited to datasheet or form/subform views of queries. Access list boxes offer better performance and easier multirecord navigation than subforms. Combo boxes are the ideal control for letting users make ad hoc choices of the information they want to see. This chapter shows you how to combine combo boxes and list boxes with VBA code to create an interactive form for a simple decision-support application.
