Chapter 32. Migrating Access 2.0 and Acc... > Using Access 2.0 Application .mdb Fi...

Using Access 2.0 Application .mdb Files with Access 97

Access 97 is designed to be backward compatible with Access 2.0 .mdb files. Nevertheless, the compatibility is not total. The following list describes the principal limitations of running version 2.0 .mdb files with Access 95:

  • You cannot save any changes you make to the design of any object contained in a version 2.0 .mdb file.

  • You cannot change ownership of, or permissions for, objects contained in a version 2.0 .mdb file.

  • DoMenuItem actions that refer to menu choices that have changed in Access 97 produce an unexpected result. Access replaces DoMenuItem action with the RunCommand action in macros and Access VBA code.

  • SendKeys operations that execute Access 97 menu choices and make selections in dialogs are likely to fail due to changes in the Access 97 menu structure and the design of Access 97 dialogs.

  • Variable names that conflict with the names of new VBA 5.0 reserved words result in failure of Access 97 to compile modules and to execute procedures containing the conflicting variables.

  • Access VBA statements that use the dot (.) operator to refer to a field of a Recordset object or a member of a collection fail. Use the bang (!) operator, as in Orders!OrderID or Forms!Orders.
